I Was Born With A Silver Spoon in Your Mouth
I Was Born With a Silver Spoon in Your Mouth was an exhibition at Soo Visual Arts Center in 2021. IWBWASSIYM is a visualization of the intersections of labor, enslavement, and inheritance of trauma. Davis examines the role of ‘epigenetics’ in everyday life. This examination coincides with the artist’s consideration that one’s personhood is communal and comprised of one’s ancestors. What does it mean to have formed an identity as a legacy to a history involving great violence, dehumanization, and forced labor under capitalism?
The body of work includes a performance video; an installation of cemetery soil samples, edible plants subsequently planted in those soil samples, and clay serving-ware handmade using clay extracted from those soil samples; and a selection of work from Davis’ Deaccessionings Series.
